How It Works

Snack on kelp jerky between meals (or when you don't have time for a meal) to keep your energy up throughout the day. It's nutrient and protein dense, so it keeps you feeling full longer. Thanks to all the vitamins (A, B1, B2, C, D and E) and minerals (zinc, magnesium, iron, potassium, copper and calcium) it contains, it helps keep your immune system strong. PLUS, it's a rich natural source of iodine, which helps to stimulate a healthy metabolism.

Story

I snack on Kelp Jerky in the morning, after the gym, and when I'm on the go and don't have time to eat a meal. It's the perfect go-to snack when I'm traveling too! It keeps my energy up throughout the day and helps me to feel full longer. The kelp and mushrooms in our jerky also help to keep my immune system strong, which is very important considering I am in an airport once a week!

I love eating Kelp Jerky so much that I decided to start a company to launch it to the world: Beyond the Shoreline. We’re a food innovation company on a mission to create delicious and nutritious products made from sustainably harvested and seaweeds.

Seaweeds are superfood plants from the ocean. There are over 50,000 varieties of seaweeds and many of them contain more vitamin C than orange juice, more calcium than milk, and more protein than soy.

Kelp Jerky is a delicious, nutrient dense, high protein snack made with locally harvested sugar kelp from the coasts of Connecticut to Maine, top quality shiitake and crimini mushroom stems from all over the Northeast, and superfoods like nutritional yeast and pea protein, as well as herbs and spices like sea salt, black pepper, and citrus. Kelp Jerky is vegan, non-GMO, and free of dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, and gluten.

Why kelp? This amazing sea vegetable is a natural source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D and E, as well as minerals including zinc, magnesium, iron, potassium, copper and calcium. In fact, it contains the highest natural concentration of calcium of any food - 10 times more than milk. Most notably, kelp is a rich, natural source of iodine that helps to stimulate a healthy metabolism.

Our Kelp Jerky is sweetened with monkfruit sugar, so it has 0 sugar calories and registers 0 on the glycemic index. It’s also naturally high in fiber and low in fat and calories.

Seaweeds aren’t just healthy for me and you - they’re healthy for our planet too. Cultivated seaweed is an zero-input food that doesn’t require land, fresh water, fertilizer, or feed to grow. It is hands down the most sustainable food on the planet. In fact, if you had a kelp farm the size of Washington State, you could feed the entire planet.

But when it comes to innovation in the seaweed space, the U.S. is behind the rest of the world, including most of Canada and Europe. We are even further behind Asian cultures, who’ve been cultivating seaweed for food and health purposes for thousands of years.

Last year, I teamed up with a New York City based, award winning chef to create a new wave of products that are on the pulse of several trends including high protein, meat reduction, sustainability, food waste, environmental stewardship, and local food production. Our first food product to market is Kelp Jerky - a chewy, delicious, seaweed-based snack in 3 flavours.

We want to unlock the potential for seaweed in the U.S. and in order to do that we're raising funds on PieShell, a crowdfunding platform for the food and beverage industry.

We’re building our company Beyond the Shoreline to be a household brand for delicious, seaweed based foods. We’re raising enough money on PieShell to pay our ocean farmers for this season’s kelp harvest and to buy the necessary equipment to take our kelp jerky product to the next level in our New York City-based lab.

We’re launching kelp jerky this year so after you donate to our PieShell campaign, we’ll mail it to you (along with tons of other fun kelp-related prizes!), and you’ll be the first to try it in 3 delicious flavors!

Or you can pre-order Kelp Jerky on our website directly, which we will be selling in 2018. Get excited and thanks so much in advance for your help! Every little bit counts.

I take kelp to boost my energy. I can't drink coffee after 10am (it keeps me up at night). Kelp is my substitute, but without any caffeine side effects!
