Dear Nutmeg Aspirin Community,
We took a break over the holidays in sending our newsletter, but not in our efforts to keep everyone informed — we’ve been researching and saving important information each day to share with you here!
As a result, this newsletter is long, but it’s packed with important information so that everyone can make informed decisions and best weigh the very real risks at hand, whether in terms of mitigating covid or in terms of taking the vaccine.
There is so much to consider, but one thought is rarely discussed in mainstream conversations: how well do you take care of yourself and your immune system? How is your diet? Your sleep? Your breathing? Your fear? Your stress?
Remember that health and wellness require taking care of the whole person. In times like these that feel out of control, remind yourself of what you do have power over and give yourself the gentle nourishment, rest, and care that you need. You deserve it.

Unexpected String of Allergic Reactions Causes Delay at 'Vaccination Super Station' Near Petco Park
"During the county's weekly COVID-19 briefing, Dr. Eric McDonald, Director of Epidemiology for the county, said vaccinations were slowed down after allergic reactions were detected in six vaccine recipients. While allergic reactions are expected in mass vaccination operations, that amount seen Wednesday was slightly higher than expected for that time period so the Super Station slowed down vaccinations so they could investigate, Dr. McDonald said. The site also swapped the vaccines it was using for a new batch out of an abundance of caution, in case the reactions had to do with the original batch."

Norway Warns of Vaccination Risks for Sick Patients over 80
"Norway said Covid-19 vaccines may be too risky for the very old and terminally ill, the most cautious statement yet from a European health authority as countries assess the real-world side effects of the first shots to gain approval. Norwegian officials said 23 people had died in the country a short time after receiving their first dose of the vaccine. Of those deaths, 13 have been autopsied, with the results suggesting that common side effects may have contributed to severe reactions in frail, elderly people, according to the Norwegian Medicines Agency."

Doctor's Death After Covid Vaccine Is Being Investigated
"Dr. Jerry L. Spivak, an expert on blood disorders at Johns Hopkins University, who was not involved in Dr. Michael’s care, said that based on Ms. Neckelmann’s description, 'I think it is a medical certainty that the vaccine was related. The fourth case, an 88-year-old man who had serious preexisting health problems, is currently being investigated."

Mexican doctor hospitalized after receiving Covid-19 Vaccine
"Mexican authorities said they are studying the case of a 32-year-old female doctor who was hospitalized after receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The doctor, whose name has not been released, was admitted to the intensive care unit of a public hospital in the northern state of Nuevo Leon after she experienced seizures, difficulty breathing and a skin rash. 'The initial diagnosis is encephalomyelitis,' the Health Ministry said in a statement released on Friday night. Encephalomyelitis is an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.'"

Israeli man reportedly dies of heart attack hours after getting COVID vaccine
"A 75-year-old man was lucky enough to get a COVID-19 vaccine in Israel, only to die a few hours later from a heart attack that officials believe is unrelated to the shot. The unidentified man got the Pfizer shot at 8:30 a.m. Monday, and within hours had lost consciousness and died at home in Beit She’an, the Jerusalem Post said."

CDC says severe allergic reactions to the Covid vaccine run 10 times reactions to the flu shot but they're still rare
"A new CDC study published Wednesday found that people receiving Covid-19 vaccines experience anaphylaxis at a rate 10 times higher compared with the flu vaccine. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur after vaccination, though the condition is rare, the CDC said. The severe allergic reactions among Covid vaccine recipients are still thought to be rare and the drugs are safe for people to use, a top CDC official told reporters before the study was published."

Woman in Portugal Dies after Receiving Pfizer Vaccine
"A 41-year-old health worker in Portugal suffered a “sudden death” just two days after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. According to the EuroWeeklynews, Sonia Azevedo, a mum-of-two had no prior health conditions and hadn’t had any adverse effects after getting the Pfizer jab. Sonia worked at the Institute of Oncology in Porto before she collapsed on New Year’s Day."

West Virginia health officials mistakenly gave 42 people Regeneron IV Covid treatment instead of vaccine shot
"42 people in West Virginia received Regeron's Covid-19 monoclonal antibody treatment instead of the Moderna vaccine on Wednesday, the West Virginia National Guard said. The National Guard said it learned of the 'error' on Wednesday. The antibody treatment, which is given through an infusion, is seen as a promising treatment for Covid-19 when administered early on after infection."

Suspicions grow that nanoparticles in Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine trigger rare allergic reactions
"Severe allergy-like reactions in at least eight people who received the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech over the past 2 weeks may be due to a compound in the packaging of the messenger RNA (mRNA) that forms the vaccine’s main ingredient, scientists say. A similar mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna, which was authorized for emergency use in the United States on Friday, also contains the compound, polyethylene glycol (PEG). “But the trials did not measure whether vaccinated individuals can still infect others. This means we can’t assume that the vaccines — even adequately deployed — will eradicate the virus. They might; we just don’t know.The vaccines are not risk free. Most side effects appear to be mild and short lived, but not all. For example, with the Moderna vaccine, the frequency of grade 3 adverse events — those severe enough to prevent daily activity, including fatigue and muscle pain — is higher than it is for most vaccines: 17.4 percent, or nearly one in five 18-to-64-year-olds who received the vaccine in the company’s trial. (Grade 3 adverse events appear to occur less frequently with the Pfizer vaccine, but a direct comparison is not possible.) And there have been some serious allergic reactions. It’s reasonable for people to weigh all of this in making their decisions. For those unlikely to become seriously ill with Covid, the vaccines’ risk-benefit analysis is not clear cut. CDC issues new guidance about vaccinations for people with underlying health conditions
"Thus, the CDC added that those vaccines that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration 'may be administered to people with underlying medical conditions provided they have not had a severe allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in the vaccine.' The CDC explained that people with weakened immune systems due to other illnesses or medication may also receive a COVID-19 vaccine, but they should be aware that limited safety data is available on the effects of the vaccines on these individuals. Additionally, while people living with HIV were included in clinical trials, safety data for this group is not yet available. The CDC also stated in its Saturday guidance that individuals with autoimmune conditions may take the vaccine, although there is no data currently available for the safety of the vaccine in this demographic."

Informed consent disclosure to vaccine trial subjects of risk of COVID-19 vaccines worsening clinical disease
"Patient comprehension is a critical part of meeting medical ethics standards of informed consent in study designs. The aim of the study was to determine if sufficient literature exists to require clinicians to disclose the specific risk that COVID-19 vaccines could worsen disease upon exposure to challenge or circulating virus. COVID-19 vaccines designed to elicit neutralising antibodies may sensitise vaccine recipients to more severe disease than if they were not vaccinated. Vaccines for SARS, MERS and RSV have never been approved, and the data generated in the development and testing of these vaccines suggest a serious mechanistic concern: that vaccines designed empirically using the traditional approach (consisting of the unmodified or minimally modified coronavirus viral spike to elicit neutralising antibodies), be they composed of protein, viral vector, DNA or RNA and irrespective of delivery method, may worsen COVID-19 disease via antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). This risk is sufficiently obscured in clinical trial protocols and consent forms for ongoing COVID-19 vaccine trials that adequate patient comprehension of this risk is unlikely to occur, obviating truly informed consent by subjects in these trials."

Vitamin K deficiency linked to harsher COVID-19 illness, study finds
"Danish researchers looked at 138 COVID-19 patients from Hvidovre Hospital and compared their vitamin K levels to a control group of 140 healthy people. They found that, on average, the COVID-19 patients had vitamin K levels that were half of the control group’s. In the 43 patients who died, the levels were even lower. Vitamin K is important for maintaining healthy blood."
