Dear Nutmeg Aspirin Community,

We took a break over the holidays in sending our newsletter, but not in our efforts to keep everyone informed — we’ve been researching and saving important information each day to share with you here!

As a result, this newsletter is long, but it’s packed with important information so that everyone can make informed decisions and best weigh the very real risks at hand, whether in terms of mitigating covid or in terms of taking the vaccine.

There is so much to consider, but one thought is rarely discussed in mainstream conversations: how well do you take care of yourself and your immune system? How is your diet? Your sleep? Your breathing? Your fear? Your stress?

Remember that health and wellness require taking care of the whole person. In times like these that feel out of control, remind yourself of what you do have power over and give yourself the gentle nourishment, rest, and care that you need. You deserve it.

We’re here for you and hope that the information below helps you to feel more at ease about how to best take care of yourself during this season.

Unexpected String of Allergic Reactions Causes Delay at 'Vaccination Super Station' Near Petco Park

"During the county's weekly COVID-19 briefing, Dr. Eric McDonald, Director of Epidemiology for the county, said vaccinations were slowed down after allergic reactions were detected in six vaccine recipients. While allergic reactions are expected in mass vaccination operations, that amount seen Wednesday was slightly higher than expected for that time period so the Super Station slowed down vaccinations so they could investigate, Dr. McDonald said. The site also swapped the vaccines it was using for a new batch out of an abundance of caution, in case the reactions had to do with the original batch."

Norway Warns of Vaccination Risks for Sick Patients over 80

"Norway said Covid-19 vaccines may be too risky for the very old and terminally ill, the most cautious statement yet from a European health authority as countries assess the real-world side effects of the first shots to gain approval. Norwegian officials said 23 people had died in the country a short time after receiving their first dose of the vaccine. Of those deaths, 13 have been autopsied, with the results suggesting that common side effects may have contributed to severe reactions in frail, elderly people, according to the Norwegian Medicines Agency."

Suspicions grow that nanoparticles in Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine trigger rare allergic reactions

"Severe allergy-like reactions in at least eight people who received the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech over the past 2 weeks may be due to a compound in the packaging of the messenger RNA (mRNA) that forms the vaccine’s main ingredient, scientists say. A similar mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna, which was authorized for emergency use in the United States on Friday, also contains the compound, polyethylene glycol (PEG). PEG has never been used before in an approved vaccine, but it is found in many drugs that have occasionally triggered anaphylaxis—a potentially life-threatening reaction that can cause rashes, a plummeting blood pressure, shortness of breath, and a fast heartbeat."

Vaccine Hesitancy; is it Justified?

Via NY Times

Don't Pressure the Vaccine-Hesitant

“But the trials did not measure whether vaccinated individuals can still infect others. This means we can’t assume that the vaccines — even adequately deployed — will eradicate the virus. They might; we just don’t know. The vaccines are not risk free. Most side effects appear to be mild and short lived, but not all. For example, with the Moderna vaccine, the frequency of grade 3 adverse events — those severe enough to prevent daily activity, including fatigue and muscle pain — is higher than it is for most vaccines: 17.4 percent, or nearly one in five 18-to-64-year-olds who received the vaccine in the company’s trial. (Grade 3 adverse events appear to occur less frequently with the Pfizer vaccine, but a direct comparison is not possible.) And there have been some serious allergic reactions. It’s reasonable for people to weigh all of this in making their decisions. For those unlikely to become seriously ill with Covid, the vaccines’ risk-benefit analysis is not clear cut. Nor is it obvious for groups that were excluded from the trials, such as pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals. Then there are the millions of people who have already been infected and acquired immunity. But considering a vaccine’s risk-benefit ratio is not the work of conspiracy theorists. Many people who are hesitant now may turn out to be later adopters. We must be alert to misinformation, but we also need to resist magical thinking on vaccines: 'Safe' is a term of advocacy, not science or journalism.”

Today, two journal publications and around 400 pages of summary data are available in the form of multiple reports presented by and to the FDA prior to the agency’s emergency authorization of each company’s mRNA vaccine. CDC issues new guidance about vaccinations for people with underlying health conditions

"Thus, the CDC added that those vaccines that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration 'may be administered to people with underlying medical conditions provided they have not had a severe allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in the vaccine.' The CDC explained that people with weakened immune systems due to other illnesses or medication may also receive a COVID-19 vaccine, but they should be aware that limited safety data is available on the effects of the vaccines on these individuals. Additionally, while people living with HIV were included in clinical trials, safety data for this group is not yet available. The CDC also stated in its Saturday guidance that individuals with autoimmune conditions may take the vaccine, although there is no data currently available for the safety of the vaccine in this demographic."

Informed consent disclosure to vaccine trial subjects of risk of COVID-19 vaccines worsening clinical disease

"Patient comprehension is a critical part of meeting medical ethics standards of informed consent in study designs. The aim of the study was to determine if sufficient literature exists to require clinicians to disclose the specific risk that COVID-19 vaccines could worsen disease upon exposure to challenge or circulating virus. COVID-19 vaccines designed to elicit neutralising antibodies may sensitise vaccine recipients to more severe disease than if they were not vaccinated. Vaccines for SARS, MERS and RSV have never been approved, and the data generated in the development and testing of these vaccines suggest a serious mechanistic concern: that vaccines designed empirically using the traditional approach (consisting of the unmodified or minimally modified coronavirus viral spike to elicit neutralising antibodies), be they composed of protein, viral vector, DNA or RNA and irrespective of delivery method, may worsen COVID-19 disease via antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). This risk is sufficiently obscured in clinical trial protocols and consent forms for ongoing COVID-19 vaccine trials that adequate patient comprehension of this risk is unlikely to occur, obviating truly informed consent by subjects in these trials."

Britain Opens Door to Mix and Match Vaccines, Worrying Experts

"Britain has quietly updated its vaccination playbook to allow for a mix-and-match vaccine regimen. If a second dose of the vaccine a patient originally received isn’t available, or if the manufacturer of the first shot isn’t known, another vaccine may be substituted, health officials said. The new guidance contradicts guidelines in the United States, where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noted that the authorized Covid-19 vaccines 'are not interchangeable,' and that 'the safety and efficacy of a mixed-product series have not been evaluated. Both doses of the series should be completed with the same product.' Some scientists say Britain is gambling with its new guidance. 'There are no data on this idea whatsoever,' said John Moore, a vaccine expert at Cornell University. Officials in Britain 'seem to have abandoned science completely now and are just trying to guess their way out of a mess.'"

Number 2: Vitamin C, we know it's working well. There have been some studies on COVID where vitamin C has shown to have very good benefits in the outcome of an illness.

Number 3: Zinc stops viral replication multiple ways, so it prevents the virus from hijacking your DNA, prevents the virus from replicating. It also prevents the virus from entering the cell, so zinc is very important right now.

Number 4: Quercetin, which is what's called a natural bioflavonoid. Quercetin opens up the cells in your body so that zinc can get inside your cells, where it works. So think of quercetin as the key. Think of zinc as the repairman, that is allowed into the house, so-to-speak,' says Dr. Osborne."

Asymptomatic Transmission of Covid-19

"Unusually in disease management, a positive test result is the sole criterion for a covid-19 case. Normally, a test is a support for clinical diagnosis, not a substitute. This lack of clinical oversight means we know very little about the proportions of people with positive results who are truly asymptomatic throughout the course of their infection and the proportions who are paucisymptomatic (subclinical), presymptomatic (go on to develop symptoms later), or post-infection (with viral RNA fragments still detectable from an earlier infection). It’s also unclear to what extent people with no symptoms transmit SARS-CoV-2. The only test for live virus is viral culture. PCR and lateral flow tests do not distinguish live virus. No test of infection or infectiousness is currently available for routine use. 678 As things stand, a person who tests positive with any kind of test may or may not have an active infection with live virus, and may or may not be infectious."
