How It Works

Hot water with lemon and honey is a pretty standard recommendation for soothing a sore throat. If you have a cough and/or a lot of mucus, add about 4 shakes of powdered cayenne pepper to your drink (a little more if you can handle it, a little less if it's too much!). So, the full recipe would be: juice from 1 lemon, 1/2 tsp honey (or more, to taste), 14 oz. hot water, 4 shakes of cayenne pepper powder.

Cayenne pepper contains capscaicin which helps thin mucus. I've also read that it can decrease mucus production as it increases circulation.

Story

I've been doing this for so many years that I don't even remember where the recommendation came from. My parents or one of my childhood doctors, I assume.

What do you think?

I have used this for years for seasonal allergies (get local, seasonal honey) and colds and sniffles. My husband asks me to make it at the first sign of a sore throat and sniffles. LOVE this recipe.
